Nissan dealer serving Northlake, Illinois - Al Piemonte Nissan
The history of Nissan goes back to 1914 when Masujiro Hashimoto designed a small box-type passenger style vehicle, which would later be released under the name "Dat Car". The name is symbolic within itself. Dat denotes the family co-partners' names who helped Hashimoto accomplish his goal: DAT is derived from Kenjiro Den, Rokuro Aoyama, and Meitaro Takeuchi. In 1918 the company changed its name over to Kwaishinsha MotorCar Company and then over to DAT MotorCar Company by the mid 1920s. The DAT style models and Datsun passenger cars were produced, but the company primarily focused on truck production during this time due to a low demand for passenger vehicles during those years. Eventually DAT merged with Jitsuyo Motors and became DAT Automobile Manufacturing Co. The first Datson was released in 1931, but the name Datson changed over to Datsun, in honor of the national flag of Japan, also known as the "Land of the Rising Sun".
A man by the name of Yoshisuke Aikawa eventually would become the founder of Nissan. He bought shares in DAT Motors, and eventually DAT Motors would merge with Tobata Casting Co. Ltd. The company changed its name over to Nissan Motor Co. on June 1, 1934. By the following year, Datsun passenger cars and trucks were being mass produced, and this vehicle was a symbol of Japan's strong industrialization during these years. Exported vehicles to Australia came about that same year, and Nissan was showing very promising signs of growth and even purchased design plans, along with plant facilities, from the United States in 1936, but as World War II came about everything changed.
The war brought about a shift in production. Nissan constructed trucks and airplanes for Japan's military conquest of the Pacific. Engines were also produced for both planes and torpedo boats. The company actually moved to China during the war, as Japan began to occupy land there, but eventually U.S. and Russian Forces gained the upper hand in the war and took control. The company became paralyzed during the early postwar years, but production of Nissan trucks and Datsun style passenger cars resumed in 1947. In 1952 Nissan hooked up with Austin Motor Company, a European company. This allowed Nissan to get automobile and engine designs, but the agreement with Austin also made Nissan produce Austin cars and sell the vehicles in Japan under the Austin trademark name, a goal which was accomplished. By 1958 Nissan was making waves as a Datsun 210 style vehicle was crowned champion in the Australian Rally, a very tough race. In 1960 the company was awarded the Deming Prize, which showed superior engineering excellence. Nissan was now in a position to grow rapidly. The 1959 Bluebird model and the Cedric, which came out in 1960, were very popular and allowed Nissan to go into mass production. By the mid 1960's, Nissan decided to merge with Prince Motor Company, and more upscale vehicles such as the Gloria and Skyline were produced. Nissan was expanding on a global basis by this time and eventually established assembly operations in the U.S. by the early 80's. The company constructed light-weight materials, with body panels designed out of high tensile steel sheeting. This is a great example of the engineering excellence established by Nissan. Today, Nissan continues to impress with its innovative vehicle output. The company now has manufacturing plants in 17 different countries globally, and is planning to start selling electric cars in the state of California in 2010. These electric cars are setting the stage for the future production of energy efficient automobiles that do not release toxins into the earth's atmosphere.
